Extensive striae distensae as a result of topical corticosteroid therapy in psoriasis vulgaris.

چکیده
Sir, Striae distensae are common skin alterations first described in the medical literature by Troisier & Menetrier in 1829 (1). In 1936, Nardelli (2), named the lesions striae atrophicae. Striae distensae occur as linear bands of atrophic or wrinkled skin that initially appears erythematous and fibrotic, later becoming hypopigmented. They are common in both sexes. Incidence varies from 5% to 35%, but the striae occur 2.5 times more frequently in girls than in boys. In 90% of pregnant women, striae distensae appear on the breast and/or lower abdomen. They are rare in children below the age of 5 years (3). The distribution pattern frequently includes the thighs, buttocks, breasts, shoulders and lower back. All striae distensae have the same appearance irrespective of the cause, but their aetiology remains a mystery. We report on a teenage girl who had suffered from psoriasis vulgaris for 10 years and who had received prolonged potent topical steroids treatment in adolescence resulting in extensive striae distensae.

Evaluation of the efficacy of topical Caffeine in the treatment of Psoriasis Vulgaris: A randomized, double-blind clinical trial
Background and aim: Psoriasis is one of the most common papulosquamous diseases that often requires long-term maintenance therapy. Long-term use of topical corticosteroids on the face and intertriginous areas will increase the risk of steroids side effects such as striae and atrophy development. A safe, effective and inexpensive modality in topical therapy of inverse psoriasis is required...

Sir, We read with great interest the report recently published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology by Balasubramanian and Srinivas[1] which describes a patient with pustular psoriasis occurring on the striae distensae.[1] The patient complained recurrent episodes of generalized pustular eruptions since the age of 15 years. Since the disease was recalcitrant, the patient had assumed systemic st...
متن کاملSuccessful treatment of major pemphigus vulgaris relapse with mycophenolate mofetil and high-potent topical corticosteroid
Background: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune bullous disorder that is fatal if left untreated. High dose systemic corticosteroids are the basis of therapy. The addition of immunosuppressive agents has improved the disease outcome and reduced the required corticosteroid dose and related toxicity. Mycophenolate mofetil is increasingly used as a steroid-sparing agent in immunotherapy of PV...
متن کاملTopical tazarotene therapy for psoriasis, acne vulgaris, and photoaging.
Psoriasis, acne vulgaris and photoaging are common conditions. Tazarotene is a pro-drug of tazarotenic acid, a receptor-selective retinoid, which has shown efficacy in the treatment of these disorders. In the treatment of acne vulgaris, it has greater comedolytic activity than the currently available topical retinoids. In psoriasis, tazarotene normalizes keratinocyte differentiation, reverses k...
